Good campground and beautiful views, the site itself and the facilities were very clean. However - dear god the cockroaches. We woke up in our tent the next morning with several roaches crawling around us, it was disgusting. I realize that this has more to do with how heavily-trafficked this campground and there isn't much park staff can do about it (which is why my review is four stars and not lower), but seriously - be aware of this and take precautions.
- Heavy thunderstorms can occur. Prepare accordingly.
- The ground is too hard for tent pegs. Prepare to use stones, which can be found at the campsite.
The campground is very beautiful and is directly in the beautiful Zion National Park. The free transfer shuttles through the park can be easily reached. The bathrooms were nice and clean.
- There are no showers and camp showers are not permitted. There are pay showers (approx. 4$ per 5 min) outside the national park. You can take a swim in the river if it's warm outside.
Here a few notes, that may help you planning:
Great price, very nice and well kept. Definitely crowded and close to neighbors but very majestic located right below watchman's tower at the entrance to Zions national park. Bathrooms with flushing toilets, big washing basins with water to wash dishes. They also had soap and a scrub sponge there. Great place to camp!
- If you want to prepare a meal with raw meat, make sure to hang a piece of raw meat outside your campsite first. This will save you from a swarm of greedy wasps.
In looking at my trip photos for Zion it occurs to my that my campsite ratings could be easily determined by the number of photos I take of a campsite. The North Rim of the Grand Canyon site that will likely forever be one of my favorites - literally hundreds of photos..... Zion - a grand total of 7! To say the least I didn't enjoy this campground at all..... but it serves it's purpose. It is not unlike the cheap hotel that you pick just to get you close to the attraction you are wanting to visit - you don't spend much time in the room (campsite) at a place like this, so there you go. The main reason we chose to stay at an official campground here was because private vehicles are not allowed on the main park road and you can access the shuttle with a short walk from the campground. It saved us from having to find parking for our larger than norm vehicle. The campground itself is basic.... sites are close together, dusty, no privacy. There are 176 sites in 6 loops. Bathrooms were clean. If you are in normal shape it is an easy walk to town for dinner.... or ice cream on a hot day. We had our bikes as well so we rode those around town. We were in Loop B site #009.
We had a walk in site in the beginning of September.
Convenient camp site right at the gates of Zion -- easy access to the visitors center and the town Springdale. Campsites are small but clean. Catch sunset on the nearby Watchman trail.
